What Sets the Price of Hair Extensions, and Why No Two Quotes Match

There is no single price for hair extensions, because the phrase names a category rather than a specification. What you pay is assembled from a small number of independent variables — the weight of hair in grams, its length, the drawing standard, how the colour was produced, the attachment components and the hours of skilled labour at both ends — and moving any one of them changes what the goods cost to make. This page publishes no figures, deliberately: a number with no specification attached is a number for a different product, and it decays quietly into an inaccuracy while people go on quoting it. What replaces it is the structure, so that you can take any quotation from any supplier apart and see what is actually inside it.

Ask what hair extensions cost and you get either a figure describing something you did not want, or a range wide enough to contain every answer and therefore none. Neither is evasion. A price attaches to a specification, and hair extensions is not one: it is a category whose cost of production differs enormously by variables most quotations never mention.

There is no price for hair extensions, and this page does not publish one

One finished set differs from another in the weight of hair supplied, its length, whether the bundle was drawn once or repeatedly, whether the colour is natural or processed, what the attachment component is, how many there are, and how many skilled hours went in at each end. Each moves the cost of production independently, so a single figure for the category would have to hold them all still at once.

So a page answering how much do extensions cost with one number is not being generous. Whoever publishes it has silently fixed every variable behind it at the least expensive setting, because that version reads well. The reader carries it to a consultation as an expectation, and the correction arrives as a run of upward adjustments, each true and all after the anchor was set. A national average is the same device at a larger scale.

So there are no figures here: no range, no starting-from, no rate per gram, nothing about what anybody else charges. Part of that is self-interest and we will name it: we quote against specifications, and would rather quote than be sorted on a headline that describes nothing. The rest is that a published figure ages badly in silence. What follows works on any supplier in any country, ourselves included.

You are buying grams, and everything else describes the packaging

Hair is bought, processed and sold by mass, because mass is what is consumed at every stage. Raw hair arrives on a scale and is paid for by weight; sorting, drawing, colouring and tipping are operations on a quantity measured the same way. In most orders the largest single line is the hair, and that line is a weight.

Strand counts, packs and a full head are packaging descriptions sitting on top of that weight. A count says nothing until you know what one unit weighs, and two sets both sold as a full head can differ in mass by a wide margin. Grams are also what the client sees — density through the mid-lengths, weight in the ends — and what sets total load, which only a professional assessing that head in person should judge.

The second question is grams of what, because a gram is a unit and not a material. A gram of short, single drawn hair on a natural base and a gram of long, repeatedly drawn, lifted blonde cost entirely different amounts to put in a box, and the sections below say why. Strand count is the grams divided up, and it moves labour rather than material

Strand count is not an independent quantity you can buy more of. It is the total weight divided by the weight of one unit: settle the grams, choose a per-strand weight, and the count follows. The count, not the weight, is what the appointment costs.

Which resolves most confused comparisons here: material cost tracks grams, labour cost tracks count. The same total weight in lighter units holds exactly as much hair and roughly twice as many joints. The hair line barely moves; the manufacturing operations roughly double, because a tip is formed on each strand individually, and the fitting hours roughly double at the other end. A heavier strand at a lower count and a lighter strand at a higher count are two ways of buying the same material, priced differently because they are two different amounts of work. What the difference buys is distribution, not more hair.

Our own strand range is made in two per-strand weights, the heavier approximately twice the lighter. That ratio comes from weighing ten strands of each together as a batch and dividing by ten, so the per-strand figures are averages derived by division rather than individual weights, and we have not characterised how far individual strands sit from them. It is not a laboratory test and not a calibrated scientific measurement. It is enough for the commercial point: the lighter unit roughly doubles the joints, and joints are hours. Length raises a total twice, and the two effects multiply

The first effect is obvious and still routinely missed. Fibre has mass along its whole length, so a given visual density at a longer length needs more grams: your usual weight in a longer length gives a thinner result. Length raises the quantity before it has touched the rate.

The second is in the raw material and is rarely explained by anyone selling it. A collected bundle holds fibres of many lengths distributed around a middle, and a product made to a stated length needs every fibre in it to reach that length. As the target rises the qualifying proportion falls, and falls faster the further past the middle it sits, because by then you are working in the thin end of the distribution. What does not qualify is not wasted — it goes into shorter products — but it cannot go into this one, so cost per usable gram climbs the longer you go. Above that sits collection: long hair is years grown without cutting and without damage past the point of processing, and a smaller share of what is collected.

Both act on the same order, so they multiply — more grams, each gram dearer. Price per gram steps between lengths rather than climbing evenly, and the step between the two longest sizes is normally larger than the step between the two shortest. A supplier quoting one rate across every length is averaging, or has not said which lengths it applies to. Measure as they measure: in centimetres from the top of the attachment, not the scalp.

Double Drawn costs more because what is removed was already paid for

Drawing decides where mass sits along a bundle. Left as collected, a bundle runs to a range of fibre lengths, full at the top and tapering towards the tip because fewer fibres reach the far end. Drawing removes the shorter fibres, repeatedly, until what remains holds density most of the way down.

The cost is in what leaves. Raw hair is bought by weight, so every fibre pulled out during drawing has already been paid for at the full rate. It does not vanish — shorter hair goes into shorter products — but it leaves this order, and the weight finally shipped is a fraction of the weight bought. Then the labour: repeated skilled hand work, pass after pass, each removing less than the one before. Yield and hours rise together, and both worsen with length, because the longer the target the smaller the qualifying fraction to start with.

Which gives a check that costs nothing. Double Drawn offered level with single drawn from the same source should stop the conversation, because the arithmetic does not permit it: either the term is being used loosely, as it constantly is, or the contents do not match the label. Double Drawn is our own preferred standard, so weigh that accordingly. It changes where mass sits along the length, not what one attachment unit weighs, and what it costs more of is raw material and hand hours — a real cost, not a tier invented to sell an upgrade.

The attachment system is a component with its own materials and its own hours

Whatever the quotation shows as one figure, the attachment system is a separate manufactured item with its own bill of materials and its own labour. A bonded strand system pays a per-unit operation: the hair is divided into units, a compound is metered and moulded onto each tip, and each unit is checked. Multiply by the count and that operation dominates. The compound is a commercial variable in itself — keratin compounds come from a small number of specialist chemical manufacturers and are not interchangeable in price. Naming one is a specification with a cost attached; we specify Italian keratin for Micro.

A taped panel pays for the adhesive carrier and the mounting operation, and the strip is bought again at every reinstallation: low hours at the chair, recurring material. A weft has nearly all its cost decided in the factory, where construction is the whole variable — a machine seam is quick and inexpensive, while hand-tying is a person tying small groups of fibres onto a thread, the dearest construction per gram we make. Identical hair, identical grams, and the difference is hours. Ring systems carry the least component cost on our side, so that family's money sits at the chair rather than in the box.

Colour is a process, and a bespoke match is a batch of one

Colour costs what the process costs, not what the shade is called. Hair arriving on a natural base and sold on that base is washed and sorted and nothing else — the least expensive colour to supply, and nothing lesser as a product.

Lifting is chemistry, time and loss. Removing existing pigment takes more passes the further the lift goes, and more fibre fails on the way. Failed hair is not sold; it was bought by weight and leaves the order like a drawing offcut. That falling yield is why pale shades sit at the top of every catalogue's cost structure. Naturally blonde bases are scarce nearly everywhere in this trade, so most blonde extension hair is lifted hair — a processing question rather than a sourcing one.

Multi-tone, root shadow, balayage and blends cost more again, and the mechanism is batching. A flat shade is one process run; a shadowed root with lighter mid-lengths is a sequence of controlled applications along a bundle held in position, with little tolerance, because the transition must still read as continuous once the bundle is cut and moving on a head. A blend is two or three separately processed batches combined in proportion, each matched and mixed evenly enough not to band — and repeating it months later from a different raw lot is a further matching problem.

Custom blending to one client is that work at the smallest batch size there is: assess the sample, decide the components, produce a small quantity, compare it in daylight against the client's own hair, re-run when it misses. The yield is poor by definition, since a bespoke blend cannot be pooled and the remainder rarely fits a catalogue shade. Whether colour happens in the same building also decides who answers when a shade comes back wrong — part of what the manufacturer page sets out.

Application is a separate trade, and the cheapest hour is usually the dearest year

Everything above is the cost of goods. Application is a different trade with a different cost base, which is why a salon quotation and a supplier quotation cannot be compared directly, and why a client who has priced the hair has priced about half of it.

Chair time tracks the number of attachment points more closely than anything else, but the count is not the whole hour. Sectioning is decided by the hair in front of the technician: fine hair needs smaller sections and more care over how much natural hair goes into each joint, coarse hair needs more of it lifted and held, and heavy layering or a short crown adds placement decisions a uniform head does not present. The target look adds more — a large change in length, a colour transition blended so the join does not show, a set cut into an existing shape once it is in. That finish cut is the line most often absent from a quotation and most responsible for whether the result reads as hair or as extensions.

The cheapest application is usually the most expensive over a year because every corner available under time pressure shortens the life of the set. Sections taken too thick leave a joint gripping only the outer fibres. Too much natural hair in one joint concentrates load instead of distributing it. Joints set too close to the scalp are awkward to move up; set too far, they show from the first day. And removal, the step with no visible product to justify the time, is where hair is lost.

None of that presents as an application failure. It presents as hair that slips, matts or sheds, read as a fault in the goods, so the remedy bought is usually new hair rather than a different pair of hands. We manufacture rather than apply and publish no hour figures; ask the operator for theirs.

A set of extensions is a service interval, not a purchase

The figure quoted at the start covers the hair and the first fitting, but ownership runs until the set is taken out for the last time. Reapplication is governed by growth, not by an interval a supplier can publish: a joint travels away from the scalp at whatever rate that head grows, and once far enough out it becomes visible, gains leverage and starts collecting shed hair. That is the trigger for a move-up, and two clients with the same set will not be on the same schedule — one reason no honest annual figure exists.

Every reinstallation consumes something. Bonded strands are re-tipped with fresh compound and lose a little tip length each cycle. Taped panels are re-taped and the strip bought again. Rings are frequently reusable, the lowest recurring material cost here. Wefts can be refitted directly if the seam is sound. Each also buys the chair hours again in roughly the proportion the first fitting did, and the hair itself has a service life ended by cycles of washing, heat, friction and removal rather than by a date.

So the only honest comparison is total cost of ownership over a defined period: purchase, first fitting, every scheduled reinstallation with its consumables and hours, removal, and any replacement hair. Options far apart at purchase often converge across a year and sometimes cross, and which one crosses depends on a growth rate and a routine belonging to one person — which is why it must be worked out for your case rather than published as a table. Why cheap quotes are cheap: the corners, described as mechanisms

A low quotation is not evidence of anything by itself. Cost bases differ legitimately: shorter lengths, single drawn, a natural base, machine construction, a larger batch, a lot being cleared. What deserves a question is a low figure attached to a specification that cannot be produced at that level. The items below are mechanisms rather than accusations, each a real way of taking cost out. Most are cheap to do and expensive to detect, except by washing a sample hard before committing to a quantity.

Whether any of it can be answered depends on whether the seller made the goods: a factory can examine its own process and say what changed, while a trader can only pass the question upstream. How to tell them apart, with checks that work in any sourcing country, is on the Turkey page.

  • Mixed lots: hair pooled from several sources looks consistent in the box and behaves inconsistently after a few washes
  • Loose drawing: one light pass described as Double Drawn, showing as density that falls away towards the tips
  • Stripped cuticle with a coating: chemically removing the cuticle stops non-aligned hair tangling and silicone supplies the slip, both lasting a limited number of washes — hair that behaves well, then matts suddenly
  • Over-driven lifting: pale shades reached too fast, with failed fibre blended back in rather than removed
  • Unstated bond compound: one that sets cloudy, goes brittle in cold, or will not dissolve in the specified remover — the corner that costs clients their own hair at removal
  • Fewer hours at the chair: the largest reducible line in a fitted price, producing failures the client blames on the goods

What a comparable quotation states, line by line

A quotation becomes comparable when it states the specification it is a price for. That is not a demand to see anybody's margin; it is a demand that the document say what is in the box. Everything below is knowable to whoever made the goods: a supplier who cannot state it either did not make it or has not asked whoever did.

Whether a quoted weight includes the attachment components is a real ambiguity, and left unstated the difference falls one way. The release agent belongs on the document, because the client will one day hand it to a technician who did not fit the set. Nothing here asks what anything cost the supplier — only that they know what they sold you.

  • Total weight in grams, and whether that weight includes the attachment components
  • Length in centimetres, with the point the measurement is taken from stated
  • Drawing standard as an observable state: shorter fibres removed by repeated drawing, passes stated
  • Colour: the code and its catalogue, natural base or processed, and for a blend the components and proportion
  • Attachment system by product name and by family, not by a marketing word
  • Weight of one attachment unit, where the system has units
  • Number of units supplied, which should reconcile with the total weight
  • Texture, and whether it is permanent or has to be styled to appear
  • For wefts: machine, hand-tied or trimmed machine seam, and whether the seam can be cut
  • For a fitted price: consultation, colour service, fitting, finish cut, follow-up check
  • Which consumables are included now and which are charged again at each reinstallation
  • The removal procedure and the release agent specified for that exact joint, named
  • What is reused and what is bought again at a move-up
  • Whether the same specification can be supplied again later
  • How long the quotation stands, and what would reopen it
  • For goods crossing a border: the incoterm, the exporter of record, the shipping documents, and the position if goods arrive not as specified

Comparing two quotes, and reading a supplier who will not itemise

Two quotations almost never differ in one variable, which is what makes them hard to compare and easy to present. Normalise first: reduce both to a stated weight, at a stated length, at a stated drawing standard, in a stated colour class, in a named system at a stated unit weight. Then hold them still one at a time and see which is doing the work. Most gaps that look dramatic resolve into two or three moving together, and both quotations usually turn out to be defensible prices for different goods. Then normalise over time: a fitted price is not comparable to another until both cover the same period of wear.

The exercise pays for itself on the variable neither document mentions. Where one is silent on drawing standard and the other specifies it, that silence is the likeliest explanation of the gap. Ask about the missing line rather than the difference: is this single drawn or Double Drawn, and how many passes, has an answer. Why are you cheaper only invites a sales reply.

Suppliers who decline to itemise divide sharply enough to be diagnostic. One who quotes as a package but can immediately state the grams, the length, the drawing standard, the unit weight and the colour components is declining to split money, which is ordinary. One who cannot state them is not protecting a margin — the information is not theirs, which usually means the goods were bought finished. So ask for the specification with the price set aside: nouns and units is a normal reply; adjectives mean the itemisation is missing because the information is.

One last question, and the one we would most like buyers to use on us: what would make this quotation go up, and what would bring it down. Anyone who built the figure from components answers at once, naming the variables in order of size. Anyone quoting a number they were handed cannot.

Why will you not publish a price list?

Because a figure with no specification behind it is a figure for a different product: publishing one means fixing every variable on this page at whichever setting reads best. Am I buying grams or strands?

The same weight in lighter units holds identical hair, roughly twice the joints and roughly twice the fitting hours. Ask what one unit weighs before comparing any two counts.

Why does a longer set cost so much more than a shorter one?

Two effects multiply. A given density at a longer length needs more grams, because fibre has mass along its whole length. And each gram costs more, because a collected bundle holds fibres of many lengths and only the proportion reaching the target can be used — a proportion that shrinks faster the longer the target. Long hair in sound condition is also scarcer.

Is Double Drawn genuinely dearer, or is it a marketing tier?

It is a genuine cost. Raw hair is bought by weight, and drawing removes shorter fibres already paid for at the full rate, so a given weight of Double Drawn starts from appreciably more raw hair than the same weight single drawn. The removal is also repeated hand labour, and both effects worsen with length. Offered level with single drawn from one source, it is arithmetically impossible.

Why is a blonde or multi-tone set dearer than a natural dark shade?

Because colour is a process and the process is what you pay for. A natural base is washed and sorted. A lifted shade has pigment removed over multiple passes, and fibre that fails on the way was bought by weight and cannot be sold, so yield falls as the target lightens. Multi-tone shades and blends add batching: separate runs combined in proportion.

Why do two salons in the same city quote differently for the same method?

Usually hours, and sometimes what those hours include. Chair time tracks attachment points, but sectioning, placement around layering, the finish cut and the follow-up check all take time and can be quietly left out of a quotation. The hair specification may differ too, and is frequently the line neither quotation states.

Is a cheap quote always a bad quote?

No, and assuming so will cost you money. Shorter lengths, single drawn, a natural base, machine construction or a lot being cleared all produce a genuinely lower figure with nothing hidden behind them. What warrants a question is a low figure attached to a specification that cannot be produced at that level. Ask what the specification is, in units.

What if a supplier will not itemise?

Separate two situations. A supplier who quotes as a package but can immediately state the grams, length, drawing standard, unit weight and colour components is declining to split money, which is entirely normal. One who cannot state those things does not hold the information, which usually means the goods were bought finished. Ask for the specification with the price set aside.

How do I work out what a set will really cost me over a year?

Take the purchase and the first fitting, then add every scheduled reinstallation in that period with its consumables and hours, the removal, and any replacement hair. Your schedule is set by your own growth rate rather than a published interval, so ask your technician for their estimate. Options far apart at purchase frequently converge over a year.

Does ordering a larger quantity change the cost per gram?

Structurally, yes, for reasons about setup rather than generosity. A colour run, a drawing batch and a changeover cost roughly the same whether the batch is small or large, so those fixed elements spread across more grams. Bespoke work moves the other way: a blend matched to one client cannot be pooled. We publish no thresholds here.
