Weft Hair Extensions & Butterfly Weft: From Construction to Professional Application
Butterfly Weft is a SACH & VOGUE HAIR weft construction. Hair is organised as a continuous row; the upper section is prepared at 2 cm and can be folded into an approximately 1 cm application profile. It retains weft density while allowing a more compact, controllable row head — but that does not automatically make it better for every head of hair.
Weft hair extensions differ from strand-by-strand systems in one fundamental way: instead of dividing the added hair into hundreds of independent attachments, the hair is constructed as a continuous row that can carry substantial density through a relatively compact application area.
SACH & VOGUE HAIR has produced Machine Weft hair for years. We are now adding our own Butterfly Weft Hair Extensions construction to that range. Butterfly describes the product construction itself — not a new attachment mechanism such as keratin, tape or nano.

What exactly is a weft hair extension?

A weft is a continuous panel of hair whose strands are secured together along one upper edge. Below that edge, the hair falls freely to its stated length.
With individual bonded systems, every added strand has its own attachment point. With a weft, a large number of hairs are already organised into a continuous row before application — so the family's strength is density efficiency.
The limitation follows from the same geometry: an individual strand can be moved millimetres in almost any direction; a weft works along a line.

Machine Weft Hair Extensions
Machine Weft is the established construction in which the hair is secured along the upper edge with machine stitching. A well-made Machine Weft should have a consistent top line, controlled hair distribution and a construction that remains stable during professional handling.
The product is particularly useful when a client requires substantial density, medium or high total grams, longer lengths, and has enough natural hair to conceal and support the planned rows.
Calling Machine Weft an “old” method simply because newer weft constructions exist would be misleading. On dense hair with generous coverage and a significant volume target, a traditional Machine Weft can remain an excellent specification.

Our Butterfly Weft was developed to preserve the fundamental strength of the weft family — carrying a substantial amount of hair through an organised row — while allowing the top construction to be used in a more compact form.
The upper section is prepared at 2 cm and can be folded to create an approximately 1 cm application profile. What changes is the physical profile of the upper construction; the product remains a continuous panel.
Separate three decisions: the hair specification (length, grams, colour, texture, Draw standard); the weft construction (Machine Weft or Butterfly Weft); and the fitting method (how the professional creates the support row and secures the weft). Those three work together but are not interchangeable.

Butterfly Weft vs Machine Weft

Both belong to the same weft family. The principal difference is the construction of the top line.
- Machine Weft: traditional machine-stitched upper seam; established, robust construction; well suited to substantial density plans; requires enough covering hair to conceal the row.
- Butterfly Weft: upper section prepared at 2 cm and foldable to approximately 1 cm; creates a more compact usable top profile; retains the density efficiency of a continuous weft.

Is Butterfly Weft the same as Genius Weft or Invisible Weft?
The international weft market uses a large number of commercial names — Genius Weft, Invisible Weft, Hand-Tied Weft, Flat Weft, Seamless Weft and Butterfly Weft among them. These names are not universally standardised; two manufacturers can use similar names for products with different constructions.
SACH & VOGUE HAIR defines Butterfly Weft according to our own production specification, not according to another seller's use of the word. A salon purchasing wefts should look beyond the marketing name and ask how the upper edge is actually constructed.
A weft is a product; sew-in is an application technique

One of the most common simplifications online is: “A weft is sewn onto a braid.” That describes one traditional application method, not the definition of a weft.
Traditional sew-in or weave techniques may use a braided track. Modern salon techniques can also create support rows with beads and other professionally prepared structures before the weft is sewn into position.
The same high-quality weft can perform very differently depending on the row underneath it. Application planning has to consider where the row can safely be positioned, how much hair the natural section can support, how many grams will sit on each row, and whether the row will remain concealed when the hair moves.

Why weft hair should be sold and planned by grams
For weft hair, grams are the clearest measure of how much hair is being purchased. For SACH & VOGUE weft products, 100 grams is the core commercial reference unit — but 100 grams is not a universal prescription for a full head.
The same 100 grams behaves differently at different lengths. The useful specification therefore combines total grams, length, natural hair density, target result, number and position of rows, and the Draw standard of the hair.

Why Double Drawn matters in a weft

SACH & VOGUE HAIR prefers Double Drawn as its hair standard. Double Drawn preparation removes a greater proportion of the shorter fibres so that more of the mass continues through the length — fuller ends and more consistent density.
That matters particularly in a weft because the product already creates a broad field of hair. A panel that is extremely dense at the seam but becomes noticeably thin through the final length can create a very different finished result.
Double Drawn does not automatically make an attachment heavier: one hundred grams remains one hundred grams. It changes how the hair mass is distributed through the length.
Colour matching for weft hair

Colour accuracy is especially important with a weft because the added hair appears as a broader visual field than hundreds of dispersed individual strands. Professional weft matching often involves blends rather than one code.

How many grams of Butterfly Weft do I need?
There is no responsible universal number. First assess the client's natural density, then establish the desired length, then determine how much change in density is required, and finally decide where the weight can actually be placed.
The same 200 grams might be distributed across two, three or another number of rows depending on the client's available support and coverage. A professional plan should begin with “Where can this hair support the weight, and how should we distribute it?” rather than “Let's install 200 grams.”
Is Butterfly Weft suitable for fine hair?
Potentially — but “fine hair” is not enough information to make the decision. Fine fibre diameter and low density are not the same condition.
The more compact Butterfly Weft profile can be useful in appropriate applications, but that does not make the product automatically suitable for every fine-haired client. If the available natural hair cannot support the planned weight or conceal the row, a strand-based system may offer more placement flexibility.

Can Butterfly Weft be fitted to short hair?
Sometimes — but the key issue is not simply whether the weft can be attached. It has to be concealed and blended. A weft forms a horizontal line; enough natural hair must fall over that line to keep it covered in normal movement.
Very short crown layers, an exposed parting, short sides or insufficient perimeter coverage can therefore limit placement. Short hair should be assessed zone by zone rather than through one minimum centimetre rule.
How many rows should be installed?
There is no universal row count; more rows do not automatically create a better result. Every row creates a place where weight is supported, a line that must remain concealed, and a maintenance point.
The objective is to distribute the required grams through the smallest sensible number of well-positioned rows. The lowest row must remain hidden when the hair moves; upper rows should remain below the level at which the natural hair can still cover the construction.
Cutting and blending are part of the application

Premium hair and an excellent weft do not automatically produce a natural-looking finish. The natural hair and the added hair must read as one haircut.
After fitting, professional blending can involve softening weight lines, introducing appropriate graduation, connecting the face frame, and adjusting the extension ends to the intended finished shape. Fitting and finishing should be treated as two parts of one service.

Butterfly Weft maintenance
Weft maintenance is centred on the support row, the upper weft construction, and the free lengths of hair. After washing, the root and row area should be dried thoroughly; prolonged trapped moisture around the installation should be avoided.
When brushing, the lengths should be supported rather than repeatedly pulling against the top of the weft. As natural hair grows, the row moves away from the scalp and the weft is removed and professionally repositioned closer to the current root area.

Can Butterfly Weft hair be reused?
If the hair remains in good condition and the upper construction has not been damaged, a quality weft can be suitable for professional reinstallation. Promising a fixed number of reuse cycles would ignore too many variables.
The condition of the hair depends on washing routine, brushing, heat exposure, chemical services, daily styling, and how carefully the weft is removed and reinstalled. Thread, beads or other application components can be replaced while the weft hair itself may remain reusable if its condition allows.
Who is a strong candidate for weft hair extensions?
Weft hair is particularly effective for clients who want a noticeable increase in density, require medium or higher total grams, have enough natural hair to conceal the row, can follow regular maintenance, and want length and volume across a broad area rather than isolated points.
When should another extension method be considered?
Weft should not be made to solve every problem. A different family may offer more freedom when density is very low in the target area, the hair is extremely short and heavily layered, very precise point-by-point placement is required, or only a very small area requires correction.
