Sew-In Hair Extensions: The Weft, the Track and a Continuous Seam

A sew-in extension is a weft — hair assembled onto a horizontal seam and supplied as a continuous strip — stitched with thread onto a track built from the wearer's own hair, usually a flat braid, sometimes a row of beads. Two decisions govern the result: how the seam was constructed, which sets its bulk and whether it can be cut, and where the track was laid, which sets what carries the weight. Load runs along a line instead of at points, so wefts suit hair with enough substance to braid and enough cover to hide a seam.

Sew-in hair extensions, weave hair extensions and weft hair extensions are usually treated as one term with three spellings. Weft names a manufactured object, sew-in names what a technician does with it, and weave is the older salon word for the look. Keeping them apart is most of the skill in buying this method.

A weft is a manufactured seam before it is an attachment

Read a weft as three objects: the fibres, the thread holding them in a line, and the return — the folded or knotted material behind where they leave the seam. Bulk at the root is the return, not the hair, and most complaints about a weave showing at a parting are about a return with nowhere to hide. How hair is sewn into a weft: machine stitching and hand tying

A machine weft is made by folding hair over a thread and running the fold through a sewing machine. The stitching locks every fibre into the line, so the seam is strong, consistent and sheds very little. It pays in bulk: the line and its folded return stand away from the head, and open if a row is cut without the end being sealed.

A hand-tied weft is made by tying small groups of fibres onto a fine thread. The seam is a fraction of the thickness and lies flat, at the cost of slow skilled labour, the dearest construction per gram we make, a seam that cannot be cut to length, and shedding wherever tying tension was loose. The track: a braid or a row of beads, and then the sewing

Nothing is sewn to a scalp. The technician first builds a foundation from the client's own hair — a flat braid along the head, a row of beads, or a braid supported by beads — and the weft is stitched to it with a curved needle along the seam.

That foundation decides whether the fitting is sound. A braid must come from enough hair to carry what hangs on it, must run where the finished hair falls over it, and must sit flat, since a raised braid becomes a ridge under a blow-dry. Beaded tracks anchor the same line at points instead, adding metal at the root.

A line of load, not a field of points

A bonded strand system divides the weight into many small joints, each carrying little, placement tuned point by point. A sew-in reverses that: the grams sit along one line, the hair braided into the track carries all of it, and once the track is in there is no distribution left to adjust. That is equally the argument for it: a few long attachments go in, move up and come out faster than hundreds of small ones. Which hair a track can be built on, and which it cannot

Wefts are a density method before they are a length method. They suit hair dense, coarse or textured enough to give a braid substance and to close over a seam, and a large density change made in one appointment. On that hair a weft is frequently the correct specification.

They are wrong wherever the foundation cannot be built or hidden. Fine, low-density hair yields a thin braid carrying too many grams through too few fibres, with too little above it to hide under; alternatives are on the page for fine hair. A hairline showing traction damage should not carry more of the same, and strong layering fights a horizontal format. A scalp that is inflamed, broken, tender or recently treated is not a surface to braid tightly, and shedding of unknown cause belongs with a qualified professional first.

Seam length and grams are one decision, not two

Two quantities describe a weft and neither stands alone: the weight of hair on it, and the length of seam that weight is spread along. The same grams on a shorter seam make a denser strip that hangs heavier from every centimetre of track; along a longer seam they are thinner and need more of the head.

Planning therefore runs backwards. You begin with where a track can honestly go — how many rows the head will carry, how far each runs before the hairline or the nape, how much hair sits above it — and the grams follow. Shortening a supplied row is a manufacturing question: a machine seam needs sealing, a hand-tied one cannot be cut.

Colour across a continuous panel, and the cut that finishes it

A strand system scatters colour as points and the eye averages them. A weft presents it as a block along a line, and the eye compares, so a shade close enough when dispersed can read as a stripe beneath a parting. Most heads are not one colour, so the honest target for a panel is usually a blend. How a match is built is on the colour matching page.

A weft also arrives blunt and uniform. Sewing it on is half the work; cutting it in is the other half, and the fitting is not complete until the horizontal line is broken and the panel thinned where it meets the wearer's own ends. That cut is taken on hair that will not grow back, so it is done conservatively — the blending page covers what it can and cannot solve.

Growth, re-tightening and re-application

In the ordinary case nothing about a sew-in fails; it moves. The scalp grows away from the braid, so the track travels outwards, becomes visible at a parting, gains leverage on the hair holding it, and collects shed hair, which is where matting starts. That triggers a move-up, not the condition of the extension hair, and its timing follows the wearer's growth rate, so we publish no interval. A re-tightening is not a small adjustment: the thread is unpicked, the weft comes off, the braid is taken down and combed clear, then rebuilt and the weft sewn back on. Removal is unpicking, not pulling

Taking a sew-in out is a sequence rather than an event. The thread is cut where it can be seen and drawn out, the weft lifts away, the braid comes down, and the released hair is combed from the ends before anything is pulled. Two things go wrong here, both avoidable at the fitting: cutting thread blind takes the wearer's own hair with it, and a track left far past its move-up comes down matted, turning a short appointment into a long one.

It depends on what will lie over the seam, not on which is dearer. Can sew-in extensions be fitted on fine hair?

Usually this is the wrong family for it, and the reason is the track rather than the hair on the weft. A braid built from fine, low-density hair carries a whole row through too few fibres, and there is rarely enough hair above it to cover a seam, so the joint reads as a ridge. Distributed systems put the same grams into many small joints instead.

How much hair, and how many rows, will I need?

That is settled the opposite way round from the way it is usually asked. First, where a track can honestly sit: how many rows the head will carry, how far each runs before the hairline or the nape, and how much hair sits above each row to hide the seam. The grams then follow from the total seam length, so a weight quoted on its own is not yet a specification.
