Remy: What the Word Fixes, and What It Leaves Open

Remy describes how a bundle was assembled: every fibre with its root end at the same end, cuticle present and running one way, so neighbouring fibres slide against each other in the same direction instead of catching. No legal instrument, standards body or certification scheme defines the word. It is a trade term, free for anyone to use, which is why it appears on nearly every listing and carries almost no information by itself. It is also a separate claim from virgin, from single donor and from Double Drawn, and a bundle can be any combination of the four.

Buyers ask provenance questions and get shown product listings. Where did this hair come from, who assembled it, was the cuticle kept, and how would anyone know — those are the questions arriving in our inbox, and the pages ranking for them answer with a grid of bundles and a grade code.

The mechanism behind Remy is real, physical and consequential. The word covering it is one of the least governed terms in the trade. Both halves matter: take only the first and you overtrust the label, take only the second and you conclude the idea is marketing, which it is not.

Short answer

The cuticle is a directional surface, and the direction is set in the follicle

A human hair is three things stacked outward from its centre. A medulla may or may not run up the middle; around it sits the cortex, carrying strength, elasticity and pigment; wrapped around that is the cuticle, a sheath of flattened dead cells in overlapping layers, several deep on an undamaged fibre.

The geometry of that sheath is the whole subject. Each cell overlaps the one beneath it with its free edge directed away from the root and towards the tip, so the surface is a series of stepped edges all facing one way, under a bound lipid layer that makes healthy hair shed water.

The consequence is differential friction. A finger drawn along a clean dry fibre from root towards tip crosses the steps in the direction they lie down; drawn back, it meets each free edge head-on. The same asymmetry acts between one fibre and its neighbour, which is where it becomes a manufacturing constraint.

Direction is a permanent property of the individual fibre, set when the cell formed in the follicle. Nothing in a workshop flips a fibre's scales; the only variable a manufacturer holds is which way round the fibre is placed. Direction is intrinsic to the fibre, alignment is a property of the assembly — that distinction carries the rest of the page.

One boundary: the above is the general anatomy of keratin fibres, not a finding of ours, and we make no numeric claim about scale count or surface friction.

Remy means every fibre points the same way, and the failure mode is mechanical

Remy describes a bundle in which all fibres are assembled root end to root end, cuticle present and running one way throughout. Two conditions, not one: present, and aligned. A bundle can fail either independently, and the trade word covers both without distinguishing them.

When the condition holds, fibres in contact slide low-resistance direction against low-resistance direction, and the hair combs out, releases and settles. When it fails, a share of the fibres lie reversed among the rest, so their scale edges meet the neighbouring edges head-on. Every relative movement between two antiparallel fibres advances each one in its own low-resistance direction, and those are opposite directions: the pair does not slide back on the return stroke, it ratchets. That is the mechanism which makes wool felt, and it is why a reversed fibre is mechanically active rather than untidy.

The outcome follows from the geometry. Because migration has a direction, entanglement accumulates towards the root end, and on a fitted set that is the end which cannot move away — it is anchored at the joint. Matting concentrates there, tightens under brushing rather than releasing, and is usually past combing out by the time it is obvious. None of it appears in the first week, which is why it is never caught at the counter.

None of this touches the attachment. Alignment is a property of the hair; retention, comfort and load are properties of the joint holding it, and the two are bought together and fail separately. That separation is set out on the hair extensions page and assumed rather than repeated here.

Alignment is lost in specific operations, and each one has a name

Order is cheap to keep and expensive to restore, so where it is lost matters more than whether a supplier says the word. A ponytail cut in one piece and tied at the cut end arrives ordered by construction — the geometry was inherited from the head. Hair gathered any other way, whether combings, floor collection or several takings pooled into a sack, has no root end as a mass. Order there is not preserved but imposed, fibre by fibre, which no workshop does at commercial scale.

After that, every untying is a risk. Washing a loose mass in water is the fastest way to lose order there is, and blending two takings to make up weight preserves order only if both are held at the root and joined at the root. Drawing does not repair any of it: a pass works from the level root end as a datum, so a heavily drawn bundle proves somebody had a root datum, not that every fibre faces the same way.

Mounting is the last chance to reverse a section, since an operator setting root ends into a bond, a tape carrier or a weft seam can place a hank the wrong way with nothing downstream to catch it. The highest-risk material in any workshop is rework: hair recovered from a rejected unit, already handled and untied. Ours goes back tied and labelled or not at all.

No legal instrument or standards body defines the word Remy

There is no statute defining Remy hair. No accredited standard, no published test method, no certification scheme with a named issuing body and a stated scope, no register of qualifying suppliers, no auditor whose job is to visit a sorting bench and check. A supplier applying the word to a stripped, reversed, coated bundle is breaching nothing, because there is nothing to breach.

We are not going to fill that gap by inventing a definition and presenting it as the definition. The description above is how the term is used by people who mean something by it, ourselves included: a working consensus, not a specification anyone is held to. Even the spelling is unsettled, varying between Remy and Remi.

For a buyer the consequence is specific rather than gloomy. The word is free to say, so everybody says it, so its presence in a listing carries close to zero information. What carries information is everything around it: whether the supplier describes the state in nouns and units, whether a physical reference sample exists, whether the order describes a condition that can be failed, and what the goods do after five washes.

We use the term ourselves, because the trade has no other word for the thing. On our documents it means our own inspection standard, described in words — not a certified property, and we would rather write that than let a reader assume an authority stands behind it.

Remy, virgin, single donor and Double Drawn are four independent claims

These four get used as rough synonyms for good, and they are not synonyms for anything. Each can be true while the others are false, and collapsing them is the commonest error in a buying conversation.

Remy is about direction and about the cuticle being there. Virgin is about chemistry: never chemically processed. Single donor is about sourcing: one head. Double Drawn is about length distribution inside the bundle, a sorting operation set out on the Double Drawn page and deliberately not re-explained here. Four axes, four independent answers — and most stock sits at some mixture of them.

  • REMY — cuticle present, all fibres one way. Silent on chemistry, donor count and length spread.
  • VIRGIN — never chemically treated. Silent on direction: unprocessed combings are virgin and thoroughly non-Remy.
  • SINGLE DONOR — one head. Silent on whether that hair was kept in direction after it was cut.
  • DOUBLE DRAWN — shorter fibres removed in repeated passes, so the bundle holds density to the tip. Silent on cuticle.
  • Remy, not virgin — every coloured shade in every catalogue, ours included. Processing does not reverse a fibre.
  • Virgin, not Remy — chemically untouched hair collected without order. Cheap, and the classic matting complaint.
  • Remy and virgin, not single donor — several ponytails of one natural depth, each held at the root and blended in direction.
  • Single donor, not Double Drawn — one head with its length spread intact, so the ends taper. It is what a head grows.
  • Double Drawn, not Remy — heavily drawn stock from stripped or mixed-direction material. Full ends, and it will still mat.
  • All four at once — the rarest and dearest combination in the trade, and by some distance the most claimed.

The industry alternative is to remove the cuticle and coat what is left

This is the most useful thing on the page, and it is not a scandal. It is a standard production route with an internal logic, and following that logic is what lets a buyer recognise the output. The cheapest raw hair is unordered hair, and unordered hair mats. The cuticle is what makes direction matter — remove it and direction stops mattering, because a fibre with no scales has nothing to catch on. Stripping converts unsaleable material into saleable material, which is why the route exists.

The trade generally describes the process as an acid treatment that degrades and removes the cuticle sheath, followed by a silicone or equivalent coating applied to the bare fibre, with colour often laid on afterwards because a stripped fibre takes dye fast and evenly. We do not operate that process, so read this as a description of what the trade does and of what arrives here in returned goods.

Now the uncomfortable part. At the point of sale, coated hair out-handles good hair. Directional friction is gone, so it slides both ways, and the coating fills surface irregularity, so it is glossy and uniform. Held next to an honest Remy bundle, whose cuticle produces exactly the small resistance a cuticle should, the coated bundle feels like the better product. Anyone relying on hand feel in a showroom is being tested against a surface engineered to win that test.

The failure is progressive underneath and abrupt on the surface. Every wash removes a fraction of the coating, and how many washes it takes depends on the shampoo, the water and how heavily it was laid on. Before it is gone it goes patchy, and patchy is worse than absent, because the surface then varies in friction along its own length: some regions grip, others slide, and hair tangles at the boundaries. Underneath is a fibre with no scale layer at all, with abrasion working directly on cortical material until the ends fray.

Buyers report this as a date rather than a gradient: it was beautiful, and then around the fourth or fifth wash it changed. We hear that as a pattern in complaints and returns, which is weak evidence about frequency, since successful sets are never sent back to a factory. But the shape of the complaint matches the mechanism — a coating does not thin gracefully, and a heavy conditioner temporarily re-coats the fibre, buying a wash or two before the same conversation repeats.

Two things this is not. It is not an argument that silicone is bad: finishing agents are normal, and a light finish on cuticle-intact hair is a cosmetic choice rather than a deception. The problem is a coating standing in for a structure. Nor is it a claim that we are chemically innocent — we lift and tone hair, and lifting thins cuticle. The A grades are private nomenclature with nothing behind them

Hair is widely listed as 6A, 7A, 8A, 10A, 12A, sometimes with plus signs, sometimes as a run of letters, and buyers read these as a scale because they are written as one. No body defines them: no issuing organisation, no test underlying any grade, no register of what a 10A bundle must satisfy. A grade is a number the seller chose and printed, and it is not a lie in the legal sense, because it asserts nothing specific enough to be false.

The inflation follows mechanically. The scale is unowned and ordinal: nobody controls the top, and a higher number reads as better to a buyer scanning a page. If a competing listing says 8A, printing 9A costs nothing and gains a position. No ceiling stops the ratchet, so grades that once sat at the top of the market now sit in the middle of it — the same dynamic that produced the string of As.

Some sellers do mean something by their own grades: internally, a 10A may denote better raw material or a stricter sort. That meaning is private and does not survive the journey to another catalogue, so two 10A bundles from two sources are unrelated products sharing a code. The diagnostic is easy — if the higher grade costs more and differs only in adjectives, it is a price tier with a name.

We publish no grade for our own hair, which costs us something where buyers filter by one. What we publish instead is what can be checked on arrival: length measured with the hair straight from the top of the attachment, weight in grams, drawing standard, colour matched against a retained physical reference, weight per unit.

Remy is a floor condition, and a floor is not a ceiling

A bundle can be genuinely Remy and still be a poor extension. The condition prevents one failure mode. It does not confer quality, and it does not survive what happens afterwards.

It says nothing about the condition of the fibre before anybody cut it. Hair carries the history of the head it grew on — sun, heat styling, hard water, previous colour, wear at the tips — so a fibre can be perfectly aligned and already thin at the cuticle on arrival. Origin claims do not address it either, since they describe a place rather than a condition.

Nor does it say what was done here. Lifting is the heaviest chemical event in the life of extension hair, and colour work is where a factory earns or loses its reputation independently of alignment. Drawing standard decides whether the ends are full or tapering and is orthogonal to cuticle direction. Then the finished unit: bond consistency, adhesive quality on a tape carrier, seam construction on a weft, and whether every unit weighs what it should.

Then everything after the invoice — sections too small, spacing too tight, a release carried out with the wrong agent, aftercare that abrades cuticle as it does on anyone's own hair. Alignment is a starting condition, not immunity. Remy is therefore necessary rather than sufficient: worth insisting on, and worth nothing on its own. A supplier who answers every quality question with the word is telling you about one axis and staying silent on six, which is why the wider questions to put to any factory sit on the manufacturer page.

Lifting to a pale shade thins the cuticle, whoever does it

There is a tension inside the term that suppliers rarely raise. Cuticle is what lightening chemistry travels through to reach the pigment in the cortex, and it does not pass without cost: repeated or aggressive lift raises scale edges, erodes them, and leaves a rougher, more porous surface. So the palest shades in any catalogue have the least cuticle remaining, in anybody's production including ours, and a platinum bundle and a natural-depth bundle from one origin, both correctly Remy, are not in the same condition.

That also explains where the stripped-and-coated route is hardest to spot: at the pale end a buyer already expects a smoother, glossier surface, so the signal that would give away a coated fibre is buried in one the buyer has been trained to accept. Our own position is the one we would want from a supplier — we lift and tone, our light shades are processed hair, and we have not measured how much cuticle that costs. Judge a pale delivery against a retained pale reference, never against a natural-depth sample.

Three inspections a buyer can run, and what each one cannot establish

None of what follows is a measurement, and calling any of it one would be dishonest. These are inspections.

The directional test first. Take a small quantity from the bundle, dry, clean hands, no product on the hair. Hold it at the root end, slide finger and thumb towards the tip, then back the other way, and compare the resistance. Repeat from several places in the mass, including its interior, not only the outside face where a bundle is tidiest. A clear difference between the two directions means cuticle is present and the sample is broadly ordered.

No difference either way is the important result, and it is ambiguous in a way that decides the rest of the inspection. It occurs when a bundle is thoroughly mixed in direction, so resistance averages out. It also occurs when the cuticle has been removed and the fibre coated, because a fibre with no scales has no preferred direction. Two entirely different products fail the same test identically — and a stripped bundle passes a smoothness check better than honest Remy hair does.

One handling check helps with that ambiguity, and it tests for cuticle presence rather than alignment. Fold a small hank back on itself so one half lies against the other in reverse, and rub the two gently together. Working scales declare themselves as drag and then as tangling; a stripped or coated fibre slides. It damages the sample, so never do it on goods you intend to sell.

The wet test next. Wet a small sample in plain water, no conditioner, and handle it. Hair with an intact cuticle is not slippery when wet — the surface grips and a comb meets real resistance. A heavily coated fibre stays slick, because plain water does not remove silicone. Treat that as a suspicion rather than a finding: finishing residue and water hardness both confound it.

Then the fifth-wash test, the only check here that reaches the fibre rather than the finish. Split the sample in two, tie both at the root, wash one and seal the other away as a control — without one, the comparison is made against a memory of how the hair felt a fortnight ago, and memory is generous. Take the sample from the delivery rather than a presentation card: a card was chosen, a delivery was shipped.

What none of it establishes should be as plain as what it does. There is no proportion in these findings: a bundle can be nine parts ordered and one part reversed, pass a casual slide, and still mat in service. Nothing here speaks to origin or donor count. And this is tactile observation, not microscopy: we have run none and hold no cuticle images at magnification, which is why this page carries no photograph of one.

  • Clarifying, sulphate-containing shampoo, warm water. The object is to remove coating, not to be gentle.
  • Real mechanical friction, the way a client washes. No conditioner, mask or leave-in.
  • Dry as a client would, then comb from the tips upward, noting where the comb stops.
  • Repeat at least five times, and keep going if the sample is still behaving.
  • Compare against the sealed control, dry, under even light: reflectance, comb resistance, tangling at the tied end.
  • The finding is a change in kind, not degree — slippery becoming grabby, gloss going flat, tangles tightening.
  • Run it before the order, on a pre-production sample. It cannot prove alignment, it is destructive, and it is one sample.

Write the state you want into the order, in terms a supplier can fail

The word Remy in a purchase order accomplishes nothing, because it asserts a category rather than a condition and no arbitrator could rule on it. What works is describing the physical state and the acts producing it, so a delivery either conforms or does not.

Notice what the clauses below share. Each describes something observable, or an act that either happened or did not. Two are negative, because a positive quality claim is unfalsifiable while a statement that a named treatment was not applied is one a supplier must stand behind. The interior clause matters more than it looks: a bundle can be ordered along its outside face and mixed through the middle.

One closing point: a term with no stated remedy is a wish. Write what happens when a delivery fails, or the clause is decoration.

What we do not know about our own hair, and the chain of custody we do not claim

Provenance questions deserve a direct answer rather than a page of reassurance. We buy raw hair from suppliers. We know who we bought from, what we inspected, what we accepted and what we sent back. We do not have an unbroken chain of custody back to the head a given bundle grew on, and we do not claim one. A donor declaration passed down a supply chain is a document about a document.

What we can describe is our own conduct, which is narrower and checkable. Incoming hair is judged for direction at intake and again before mounting. Material is held tied at the root through the operations that would otherwise lose order. Deliveries are compared against retained physical references. That is a described process, not a certification, and nobody outside this building audits it.

On cuticle alignment specifically, the list of what we have not done is longer than the list of what we have. We have never counted reversed fibres in a sample, so we publish no proportion and no tolerance — not for our own hair, and not as a threshold a delivery must clear. We have made no instrumented measurement of friction in either direction, run no standardised wash protocol with numeric endpoints, and made no comparison against another manufacturer's hair. We hold no third-party test report, so no reader should infer external verification here.

What that leaves is honest and worth having: a physical mechanism that governs how hair behaves, an assembly discipline we maintain, a word no authority defines, and a few inspections a buyer can run without a laboratory. Where the line falls between what we measure, what we observe and what we decline to state at all is set out on our testing methodology page. Anyone offering more certainty than that about the word Remy is offering something the category does not contain.

Common questions

Can non-Remy hair be sorted back into Remy hair?

Not in practice. Once a mass has lost its root end, an individual fibre gives the naked eye nothing to identify which end is which — direction is a property of the surface, not a visible mark. Restoring order would mean orienting fibres one at a time by feel, across tens of thousands per bundle. This is why the stripping route exists: removing the cuticle is cheaper than re-imposing direction on hair that has lost it.

Does properly aligned Remy hair tangle at all?

Yes. All hair tangles, including the hair on your own head. Alignment changes how it tangles rather than whether it does: knots in an aligned set tend to release under a comb instead of tightening, and they do not concentrate progressively at the joint. A supplier promising hair that will not tangle is promising a property no hair possesses. Expect ordinary tangles to brush out, and the same place not to deteriorate week by week.

A supplier has offered a certificate confirming their hair is Remy. Is it worth anything?

That depends on three things printed on it: who issued it, under what scope, and against what test method. A certificate naming an accredited body, a defined scope and a published method is a document with content. One carrying a logo, a signature and no named issuing body is a printed assertion by the seller, which is what the invoice already was. Ask which laboratory, which method, and whether the underlying report can be sent.

Can aftercare turn good Remy hair into matted hair?

Yes, which is why the origin of a matting complaint is hard to settle. Cuticle is a physical structure and it abrades: heat without protection, brushing that drags at the joints, chlorinated or salt water, and sleeping with a set loose all wear scale edges away. Hair that arrived aligned can lose the surface that made alignment useful. Neither manufacturer nor salon can usually prove which happened, which is why a retained reference sample repays its small cost.

How should I ask a supplier about silicone without accusing them of anything?

Ask it as a routine process question, because for a legitimate supplier that is what it is: which finishing agents are applied, at what stage, and whether any cuticle-removal step is used at any point in production. A factory running its own processing answers in nouns without hesitating. A trader reselling finished goods often cannot, and that is informative rather than damning. The follow-up that settles it is a sample for a wash sequence, requested before the order.
